Serving God by teaching His Word in foreign lands is an exciting opportunity. It can also be extremely challenging, especially when there is a language barrier and the mission is short-term.

In Teaching English Around the World: Creation Lessons for Short-Term Mission Trips, author Cheryl B. Parker demonstrates how to combine teaching God’s Word with teaching English. She provides short-term mission teams with tools to teach English vocabulary and dialogue to students of all ages, while also teaching the Genesis account of creation in a fun, action-packed way. Each lesson is focused on a day of creation, and the dialogues relate to what God did on that day. There are memory verses related to each day, song suggestions, and creative activities that reinforce the lesson and help the team interact with the students in a meaningful way.

Teaching English Around the World will help any short-term mission team teach English and present God’s love and salvation in an effective way.

Numerous trends are presently converging in ways that make this moment in mission history significant.  These include the growth of short-term service, the multiplication of mission organizations, local churches sending missionaries without an agency, and the internationalization of missions.  It is crucial in the midst of such change that we not lose connection with the New Testament model of the missionary apostles. Apostles, now commonly called missionaries, are God’s gift for the initial planting phase of the church among every people, to the end of the age. This unique church-planting role is the forgotten foundation of the church.  Much of the ineffectiveness in missions is due to our attempts to build Christ’s church on a different foundation.

This book will examine five critical questions from the perspective of biblical scholarship, history, and contemporary experience:

Why are missions-minded Evangelicals reluctant to identify missionaries as apostles, considering that the two words have the same root meaning?

How is apostolos used in the New Testament, and specifically, is it sometimes used as a designation for missionaries?

How should we conceptualize an ongoing role for missionary apostles that does not detract from the crucial, unique role of the original apostles?

What ministry pattern does the New Testament record from the lives of the early missionary apostles?

How should an awareness of missionary apostles guide our mission efforts today?

By Wally Poor

In the fall of 1968, a group of newly appointed missionaries gathered for sixteen weeks of missionary orientation in Ridgecrest, North Carolina. They would go on to serve in all different corners of the world, spreading the message of God and making a profound and meaningful difference in people’s lives.

A moving and inspirational work, Faithful shares the stories of these missionaries and the incredible journeys they undertook. One of those missionaries, Wally Poor, recounts the different paths six missionary families underwent during more than thirty years of service. The Dunns lived through the fifteen-year civil war in Lebanon, while those who went to Latin America all had brushes with guerilla groups. The Musens served faithfully in Kenya. The Shelbys had adventures throughout Asia, helped start work in Mongolia, learned seven languages, and wound up in post-communist Russia.

Each story intertwines the development of the Southern Baptist educational and missionary program and shows how God used them all to leave a permanent witness for the Gospel in diverse and dangerous locations. But above all, these accounts reveal how God was faithful in sustaining them on the course He set.

— Don Kammierdiiner, retired vice president of the International Mission Board

Filled with real-life suspense, hope, and courage, Faithful is a moving testament to how ordinary people can make extraordinary change to those who need it most.
