Sticky Notes & Shoes

Hearing from Jesus in the little things in life.

Written by: Mary Vigil

Over the next five (5) weeks we are going to walk through life together. We are going to learn, laugh, cry and praise the Lord. We are going to live life with one another. And in the midst of everything we have going on, we are going to open His word and see our lives transformed.

My prayer for this book is that it is a tool that helps you discover the ways the Lord is speaking to you. My prayer for you, as I go on and on about my shoes and my passion for office supplies, is that you will laugh, maybe even learn something, and above all, I pray you are able to fall more in love with Jesus throughout our time together. After all, I believe Jesus will use our shoes and our sticky notes to communicate with us on a daily basis.

What if God held the citizens accountable for the unjust policies of their government?  Even more, what if the citizens of the United States faced God’s judgment because the leaders they elected failed to protect the rights of the innocent and helpless?  What if God refused to hear their prayers because they refused to choose leaders who would uphold the most basic transcendent standards of justice?

Sobering thoughts indeed.  In this provocative work, Ken Connor and John Revell dare to suggest that there is national culpability for the civil sins of their leaders, and that God views citizens’ failure to address these issues as sinful silence.

Connor and Revell raise these prospects in Sinful Silence, presenting biblical principles regarding the heart of God towards the issue of civic involvement. By examining the writings of the prophet Isaiah, they make a compelling case for believers to live up to their political responsibilities and to reflect God’s priorities regarding the participation in the civil process.”

Presented in a politically unbiased way, Connor and Revell make a strong and compelling case that breathes new life into the call for Christians to be active within our culture. They encourage believers to be salt and light within our communities and make a profound impact on our great nation.

Have you suffered deep losses or feel God has let you down? Some believers turn away from God or maintain a surface relationship. They are trapped in the spiritual ditch of God’s mystery.

Other believers think they know God so well they carry him around in their back pockets, so to speak. They pull him out like a lucky penny expecting him to respond to their bidding. They are comfortably settled into the spiritual ditch of knowing about God.

When we think we know God well, He may surprise us—often in ways we don’t like.  In the book Living Between the Ditches: When God Makes No Sense readers learn to embrace both aspects of God’s nature: We can know God; God is mystery.

Throughout the book the author tells the ?ctional story of 30-something’s Layton and Amy Brooks. Layton journeys from the ditch of knowing about God to the ditch of feeling deserted by God. Stuck between an unreliable God—who Layton thinks has taken away all that he’s known or cared about—or no God at all, Layton struggles with his ex-wife Amy, his young daughter’s upcoming surgery, his father’s death, and his mother’s illness. Layton entices readers to think about spiritual ditches in their lives.

You will examine your own views of God, understand how spiritual ditches hamper your spiritual progress, and determine to stay on the narrow road to God’s house, avoiding the ditches.

The prophet Isaiah’s life was forever changed through his vision of the holy God. In this God-focused moment, Isaiah also saw the sinfulness of his own life in a startling new way. It was a moment that would constrain and impel Isaiah all the days of his life.

Like Isaiah, we need a fresh view of God. We need to see God as He truly is—absolutely holy. We need to see our sin as God sees it. And we need to realize that while God demands holiness, He cleanses and uses imperfect people. When we come into the presence of almighty God, and we catch a glimpse of Him as He really is, we are driven to worship him in his absolute holiness.

Is it still possible to encounter the living God today? Although we are prone to think of important people as unapproachable, the God of the universe not only has made it possible for us to know Him, but it is His deep desire that we do so.

God Focus will lead you on an encounter with the living word behind the written word. Discover what was meant by the superlative song of the seraphim, the three-fold repetition of “holy, holy, holy,” and learn simple biblical truths that will help you become more like Christ. By examining God’s awesome holiness, as seen through Isaiah’s eyes, you may get a fresh glimpse of the holiness of God in your own life. Perhaps you, too, will never be the same.

True or False: A person is a Christian if he or she believes the right things about Jesus.

True or False: A person is a Christian if he or she obeys God’s laws.

True or False: A person is a Christian if he or she believes the right things about Jesus and obeys God’s laws.

Would it surprise you to hear the correct answer to all three questions is False?

Too many people misunderstand their faith at the most foundational level. Because of this misunderstanding, they pursue Christian growth and maturity in all the wrong ways. The result is failure, frustration, and the inevitable conclusion that Christianity doesn’t “work.”

Right From the Start is a two-part study exploring the truth that Christianity is not a creed or a lifestyle; it is a God-begotten life growing in you, which is spiritual in nature and therefore must be nourished on spiritual food and drink.

Anchored in the teachings of John, part one of this study explores what the Christian’s new life is made of and how to nourish it to maturity. Part two goes to the next level, demonstrating how a new way of living flows out of a new kind of being.  This is not your typical application stage of Bible study. Too often when Bible studies begin to get practical, they cease to be spiritual. Spiritual truth gets relegated to the realm of “theory” and the “real” day-to-day Christianity is lived out in the strength of the flesh – which essentially means it is not lived out at all.  This study does not leave the Holy Spirit behind when it comes time to apply the principles learned. Rooted in the book of Titus, the second part of this study examines the Christian life as a series of portraits of Christ and shows clearly and simply how Christ can be formed in you.

By Alfred McCroskey

Alfred McCroskey and his wife began as short-term missionaries in a very foreign land. Nineteen years later, they have “planted” one thousand churches in the Soviet Union. How did this miracle occur? McCroskey believed the Lord was telling him to plant the churches—especially in towns and villages where there was no church at all. McCroskey,

his wife Jean & other short-termers heeded the call, with miraculous results.

Mission Accomplished is the story of a divine assignment nineteen years in the making. Just as Noah was ridiculed for his building of the ark, the McCroskey family was scoffed at, laughed at, and even resented for their work in the Soviet Union. However, they knew the word of man had no power over the Word of God. Radical faith and obedience were called for and they responded positively.

This is the journey of two modern-day pioneer missionaries. It is proof that ordinary Christians can do more than they, or anyone else, thinks possible through the denial of self, taking up of the cross and following Jesus. It is the story of the McCroskey family, but it is a story that could be yours, as well. What “impossible dream” does God have in store for you? Through simple faith and obedience, you might just find out.
