By Carroll Martin, Jr.

Amber and Thomas Nelson have a happy marriage, three young children, and loving family members nearby in their small, friendly community. Busy with Thomas’s small business and Amber’s commitment to being a stay-at-home mom, the two barely notice that they have fallen out of the habit of going to church, even though they both were raised as Christians. Now, four days before Christmas, Amber goes to the doctor with both hope and anxiety in her heart. Could she really be pregnant again? If she is, how will she and Thomas manage?

Thomas, meanwhile, is at work at the garage he owns, even though he’s been experiencing chest pains off and on since the night before. At the young age of thirty-four, he half jokingly suspects Amber’s spicy meat loaf is giving him indigestion—but within a few hours he is in the hospital. What happens next gives Thomas a chance to reflect on his life: proud moments, missed opportunities, exciting experiences, and wrong choices. He reviews some happy times and realizes he wishes he’d done some things differently.

What begins as an ordinary day becomes a turning point for Thomas and Amber in ways that surprise both of them. Unexpected but all-too-common life events force each of them to do some soul-searching and decide what’s truly important. But is it too late for them to share their secrets and experiences with each other and make some changes?

For Clinton and Stephanie Rogers, marriage is a grand adventure and an ideal to be attained. Clint believes that his love for Stephanie will be enough to keep them together through thick and thin—but sometimes love isn’t enough.

Unfortunately, Stephanie’s innocent upbringing, her constant need to please her parents, and her inexperience with other men makes her vulnerable to advances from other suitors. Even after the birth of two children, Stephanie pursues happiness outside her marriage, engaging in flirtatious e-mails and online communications. Clint’s suspicions lead to a full-blown confrontation, and their marriage eventually ends in divorce.

Now the two must put their lives back together, and it’s not going to be easy. Clint sees his doomed marriage as just another failure in a long list, and he wants answers from God. He wonders why God has turned a blind eye to his travails and allowed him to fall time and time again.

Through a few special people, including Clint’s mother and his best friend Ray, Clint may just find out what it really means to be a man of faith.

Hands rough by labor worn

Calloused palms and nails torn.

Weary body rinds no rest

Gnarled fingers to attest

of work she's done.

Holding book of classics read.

Then tucking in each nodding head.

Last to retire in dark of night

First to rise at morning's light

Busy hands at rising sun.

Birthing seven in stark privation,

mouths to feed each new creation.

Always mothering her begotten brood.

Strongly teaching them moral good

Lesson time she could afford.

Proudly watching each child achieve

Knowing that each one would leave.

Proving that percepts caught

Would guide in life as each was taught,

Trusting in the living Lord.

Hands crossed now on silent breat

Lastly finding deserved rest

One hundred years calmly close.

Harsh years now in death's repose.
